Put several drops of food coloring into your toilet tank. If the dye appears in the bowl within the next 30 minutes, you have a leak, and need to replace either the water leveling device, which fills the tank to a certain capacity and then shuts water off, or the flapper at the bottom of the tank. (In the plumbing world, these parts are known as the auto leveling assembly and the water control diaphragm.)

Be sure you place a towel around the base of the toilet. In case you have a leak, the food coloring will not stain your carpet or tile.
