It’s hard to know whether to take this as good news or bad news: the US National Research Council (NRC) says we might soon worry less about water shortages thanks to technology advances that would let us turn municipal wastewater — ie, the stuff you flush and otherwise send down your household drain — back into nice, clean drinking water.

Even if your response is, “Hey, that’s great,” it’s hard not to also feel that this is a bit like eating the seed corn or burning the furniture for fuel. Really, is our water situation so desperate that we’re ready to start drinking toilet water?

Apparently, yes.

While we’re all for efficiency, even if you eliminate the “ick” factor, this potential solution raises a lot of questions. How much energy would go into this process, and would that create an overall plus or minus on the sustainability scale? What happens to all the stuff left over after treatment — how do we manage that? And could this mess up nature’s water cycle even more than we have already?

The exhaustive (363 pages) NRC study acknowledges plenty of uncertainties that need to be addressed before wastewater-to-drinking water goes mainstream: potential impacts on health, greenhouse gas emissions, cost, unintended consequences, security, legal considerations and much more.

Then again, as journalist Charles Fishman, author of “The Big Thirst,” has pointed out, all the water we’ve ever drunk has been around in one form or another for the past 4.5 billion years. At least some of it, he notes, was probably Tyrannosaurus Rex pee.

Is carbon monoxide poisoning more likely in the winter?

While carbon monoxide poisoning can occur any time of the year, it is more prevalent in winter because carbon monoxide gas can come from fuel-burning sources such as fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters and gas-fueled water heaters, ovens, and dryers. Exhaust from a vehicle left running in your garage also can be dangerous, particularly if the garage doors are closed. Blocked chimneys can push fumes indoors. Well -insulated new homes with tight seals and inadequate fresh air intake also can trap carbon monoxide inside.

How would I know if I’m inhaling carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide levels in your body can become deadly within minutes and you won’t see it, smell it or taste it. Headaches, dizziness and nausea are common symptoms. As carbon monoxide builds up in the blood, confusion, drowsiness, fast breathing, fast heartbeat, possible chest pain, vision problems and even seizures can result.

Is carbon monoxide poisoning always sudden?

No, a low level of poisoning can lead to heart problems and brain damage over time. If you frequently have headaches, ongoing shortness of breath and nausea when inside but feel better in fresh air, ask people living or working with you if they’ve noticed similar symptoms. Also, keep an eye on your pets; they also can become sick from ongoing low levels.

What should I do if I think I am being exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning?

If you have sudden symptoms, leave the house immediately. Staying may result in your losing consciousness and being unable to get out. Call 9-1-1 after you leave the building, or go to the nearest emergency room. If you’ve had ongoing symptoms and suspect CO poisoning, make an appointment with your doctor. A blood test can measure whether or not you have carbon monoxide poisoning. With quick treatment, most people recover within a few days.

How can I prevent carbon monoxide poisoning?

Check chimneys and vents regularly to make sure they aren’t blocked or leaking. Have a professional clean, inspect and service chimneys and vents before the heating season each year as well as any additional fuel-burning appliances you have. Never use gas-based heaters in small, enclosed areas. Don’t use a gas oven to heat your home. Don’t use a gas or charcoal grill indoors. Don’t close the fireplace or stove damper before the fire is completely out. Don’t leave vehicles running in the garage — even if the garage doors are open. Install carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas in your home. Detectors won’t pevent carbon monoxide poisoning, but they will alert you and help you get out safely.

One of the most basic amenities that we take for granted here in the US today, it is difficult to even imagine what life would be like without the toilet. But for much of the developing world, there is no need to imagine, as life without adequate sanitation is both a common and dangerous reality. Often the hidden problems behind high child mortality rates, poor water quality and lack of safe waste disposal are known to cause a host of horrible, life-threatening diseases, including rotavirus, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis.

On the 10th anniversary of World Toilet Day, which takes place on November 19, we all have a chance to help make lack of clean water and adequate sanitation a thing of the past.

Vanguard, a documentary series on Current TV, came out with this awesome 44-minute documentary on sanitation called “The World’s Toilet Crisis.” It’s raw, very candid and highly persuasive in the argument that yes — everyone in the world should have a toilet!

If you’re eating while you read this – don’t. Goodness knows what bugs you’re picking up.

A new survey by the American Dietetic Association and ConAgra Foods’ Home Food Safety program finds that as many as 83 percent of Americans eat in their office, and that they’re ignoring basic hygiene.

“For many people, multitasking through lunch is part of the average workday,” says ADA spokesperson Toby Smithson.

“While shorter lunch hours may result in getting more accomplished, they could also be causing workers to log additional sick days, as desktops hide bacteria that can lead to foodborne illness.”

According to the Home Food Safety survey, only 36 percent of respondents clean their work areas — desktop, keyboard and mouse —weekly, and two thirds do so once a month or less.

And, the authors point out, a 2007 study from the University of Arizona found the average desktop has 100 times more bacteria than a kitchen table and 400 times more than the average toilet seat.

“Treat your desktop like you would your kitchen table and counters at home,” says Smithson. “Clean all surfaces, whether at home or work, before you prepare or eat food on them.”

Only half of Americans say they always wash their hands before eating lunch, and only 67 percent say they store their lunch in a refrigerator. Rather alarmingly, around one in five people admit they don’t know if the fridge is ever cleaned, or say they know it rarely or never is.

“Food safety is very important, whether at home or at work. Simple things like washing your hands before preparing food and following microwave cooking instructions can really go a long way,” says Joan Menke-Schaenzer, chief global quality officer of ConAgra Foods.

Now go fetch that disinfectant, before you poison us all.

The most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. People who are sleeping or who have been drinking alcohol can die from carbon monoxide poisoning before ever having symptoms.

You Can Prevent Carbon Monoxide Exposure

* Do have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.

* Install a carbon monoxide gas detector.

Do install a battery-operated carbon monoxidedetector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds leave your home immediately and call 911.

* Do seek prompt medical attention if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseous.

* Don’t use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window.

* Don’t run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open.

* Don’t burn anything in a stove or fireplace that isn’t vented.

* Don’t heat your house with a gas oven.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is entirely preventable. You can protect yourself and your family by acting wisely in case of a power outage and learning the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

USDA is providing consumers with four key recommendations you can use to help reduce the risk of foodborne illness during the Thanksgiving holiday. The four easy to remember tips are Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill into practice in order to be food safe:

Clean - Wash hands, surfaces and utensils often to avoid spreading bacteria when preparing food. Hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of foodborne illness.

Separate – Use different cutting boards for raw meat, poultry, seafood, and veggies. When you prepare Thanksgiving dinner, keep the raw turkey away from vegetables and side dishes that won’t be cooked.

Cook – You can’t tell it’s done by how it looks! Use a food thermometer. Every part of the turkey should reach a minimum internal temperature of 165°F.

Chill – Keep the fridge at 40°F degrees or below to keep bacteria from growing. Pumpkin pie should always be refrigerated and leftovers should be refrigerated within two hours.

Factor in thawing the turkey, cooking the turkey, preparing side dishes and desserts—and the other duties that come with hosting a gathering with family and friends — it is easy to forget that food safety is the most important factor in determining whether the meal is an enjoyable one.

How to roast the perfect turkey.

Ingredients

1 (18 pound) whole turkey

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1 1/2 quarts turkey stock

8 cups prepared stuffing

*Tips: A meat thermometer should be used to ensure a sufficient internal temperature has been reached to destroy bacteria and prevent foodborne illness — as well as to prevent overcooking.

Prep Time: 30 Min

Cook time: 4 Hrs

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place rack in the lowest position of the oven.

Remove the turkey neck and giblets, rinse the turkey, and pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in the roasting pan. Loosely fill the body cavity with stuffing. Rub the skin with the softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Position an aluminum foil tent over the turkey.

Place turkey in the oven, and pour 2 cups turkey stock into the bottom of the roasting pan. Baste all over every 30 minutes with the juices on the bottom of the pan. Whenever the drippings evaporate, add stock to moisten them, about 1 to 2 cups at a time. Remove aluminum foil after 2 1/2 hours. Roast until a meat thermometer inserted in the meaty part of the thigh reads 180 degrees F (80 degrees C), about 4 hours.

Transfer the turkey to a large serving platter, and let it stand for at least 20 to 30 minutes before carving.

Euro RSCG Sydney is behind a new TV spot for Harpic toilet cleaner that shows men apologising for their “abominable toilet habits” as the brand positions itself not only for serious cleans but also for emergencies.

The 30-second spot shows men apologising for their toilet behaviour with men and boys of all ages apologising for their bad aim, failure to flush, the “splattering” and the stench.

Jennifer Osborne, Reckitt Benckiser category manager for Harpic, said: “Consumer research tells us that the brand is mainly used for a serious weekly clean of the toilet. But, lets face it, that good work is quickly undone by the toilet habits of Australian men. So Euro’s campaign encourages the use of Harpic for quick ‘emergency’ cleans of the toilet too.”

Steve Coll, executive creative director Euro RSCG Australia, said: “Toilet cleaner is normally considered a pretty low interest category. But I’m delighted to be working with a client and an agency team who are determined to break those expectations. In particular, huge credit goes to the creatives, Chris Johnson and Dave Ladd, who have worked tirelessly to produce a wonderfully engaging campaign.”

Health risks rise along with the mercury. Those who must work outdoors in high temperatures – or indoors....

Health risks rise along with the mercury. Those who must work outdoors in high temperatures – or indoors where processes or inadequate air-conditioning create a steamy hot environment – see a different side of summertime than most. Because can cause a range of ailments from discomfort to death, it’s essential that your workers, and their supervisors, understand the risks and how to protect against them. That means with summer on your doorstep and the temperatures already starting to soar, this is the right time to arrange some “hot” safety training. You’ll want to explain the possible health hazards of working in the heat, along with precautions for avoiding illness and basic first aid if a co- worker succumbs to the heat.

Heed these hot tips for keeping working cool. To protect workers in hot environments, OSHA recommends that you take these essential actions:

Consider a worker’s physical fitness to work in a hot environment.

Have employees work in pairs to reduce stress and so that they can keep an eye on each other’s physical condition.

Provide easy access to a supply of safe drinking water and encourage workers to drink plenty of water throughout their shift.

Avoid scheduling the heaviest work on the hottest days or at the hottest time of the day.

Alternate work and rest periods in very hot weather, making sure workers have a cool, shady place to their breaks.

Monitor temperatures and worker responses on a regular basis.

Train workers to recognize and treat the signs of heat-related illness.

Stress the signs and treatment of heat-related illness.

Be sure to include this basic information in your training on heat hazards and first aid:

Heat Stress is a common reaction to high temperatures, especially when accompanied by strenuous activity. Symptoms include thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and even difficulty seeing.
What to do: Take a break in a cool place and drink cool water or juice.

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms in arms, legs, or intestines are causing by losing salt while sweating.
What to do: Cool down and drink water or juice. Also make sure the diet includes foods that will replace lost salt.
Heat exhaustion can make a person feel week and possibly dizzy and/or nauseous. Other symptoms include chills, clammy skin, and profuse sweating.
What to do: Rest in a cool spot (preferably with feet slightly elevated) and drink plenty of fluids. If condition doesn’t soon improve, seek medical attention. Take it easy for a few days following an incident, especially if excessive heat continues to be a work factor, and reduce the pace of activity.
Heatstroke is the most serious type of heat-related sickness and is, in fact, life threatening.
Emergency medical attention is required. A victim of a heatstroke stops sweating, causing the body to overheat. Symptoms include hot and flushed skin, poor coordination, and confusion, possibly followed by loss of consciousness.
What to do: While waiting for the EMTs to arrive, move the person to a cool place, sponge with cold water, apply ice packs or cold drink cans, or immerse in cold water. Offer drinking only if the person is conscious.

Why It Matters…

The combination of heat, humidity, and human labor can be deadly.

Every year thousands of workers end up in the emergency room suffering from heat- related illness – and some of them end up dying.

Training workers to understand heat hazards and how to take the proper precautions to prevent heat-related illness will not only protect their health, it will keep them on the job where you need them, even on the hottest days.
