A new survey by the American Dietetic Association and ConAgra Foods’ Home Food Safety program finds that as many as 83 percent of Americans eat in their office, and that they’re ignoring basic hygiene.

“For many people, multitasking through lunch is part of the average workday,” says ADA spokesperson Toby Smithson.

“While shorter lunch hours may result in getting more accomplished, they could also be causing workers to log additional sick days, as desktops hide bacteria that can lead to foodborne illness.”

According to the Home Food Safety survey, only 36 percent of respondents clean their work areas — desktop, keyboard and mouse —weekly, and two thirds do so once a month or less.

And, the authors point out, a 2007 study from the University of Arizona found the average desktop has 100 times more bacteria than a kitchen table and 400 times more than the average toilet seat.

“Treat your desktop like you would your kitchen table and counters at home,” says Smithson. “Clean all surfaces, whether at home or work, before you prepare or eat food on them.”

Only half of Americans say they always wash their hands before eating lunch, and only 67 percent say they store their lunch in a refrigerator. Rather alarmingly, around one in five people admit they don’t know if the fridge is ever cleaned, or say they know it rarely or never is.

“Food safety is very important, whether at home or at work. Simple things like washing your hands before preparing food and following microwave cooking instructions can really go a long way,” says Joan Menke-Schaenzer, chief global quality officer of ConAgra Foods.

Sometimes it takes a plumber or an air-quality specialist to scout out a mysterious smell. But many odors in your home are the result of one of these easy-to-solve problems.

A little-used bathroom.

You rarely use your guest bathroom, and a methane-sulfur smell is coming from the sink or shower drain. Solution: Run the water once every week or so. Plumbing pipes lead to the sewer, but they’re designed with suction to keep sewer-gas fumes out of your drains. To work properly, they need to hold a small amount of water. If all the water evaporates from your drains, the gases build up and fumes can waft up through the drain and into the room.

Short rooftop vents.

Most plumbing systems vent through the roof. If the home faces north or south and its ridge line runs east and west, the sewer-vent pipe sometimes emerges on the north-facing side of the home. Because the prevailing breezes in Arizona come from the south and southwest, they hit the south side of the roof and roll down the north side.

If your vent is on the north side, this can create positive pressure in the vent – which is designed to release sewer gas into the air – forcing the gas back into the house. Solution: Buy a 5-foot section of corrugated high-density polyethylene pipe from the hardware store and slip it over the vent pipe. That will make it tall enough to avoid the draft. Nine times out of 10, this eliminates odor problems in the home and yard.

Sink pipe.

If the sour smell is coming from only one drain, the pipe under that sink could be obstructed. The bend in the pipe – called a P-trap – can collect hair, toothpaste, gel, dirt and other gunk that will reek if it sits in there long enough. Solution: Remove the P-trap and clean it out. To dissolve the clog without removing the trap, pour an enzyme-based cleaner such as Bio-Clean down the drain every day until the enzymes can eat away at the organic waste trapped there. Then, treat the drains regularly to prevent future clogs.

The water heater.

Check to see if your water heater’s anode rod is shot. Sometimes, a bad smell in the sink comes from the water and not the drain. Fill your sink with hot water. Let it sit for a minute, then put your nose close to the water and breathe deeply. If it smells bad, the culprit is probably the water heater. Solution: Replace the anode rod, which corrodes over time. Sometimes called a “sacrificial anode,” the metal rod is designed to deteriorate in order to protect other exposed metals in the tank. Rods last six months (if you over-soften your water) to six years or more.

Smoke.

If a smoker lived in your house, that smoke is embedded in the carpets, air ducts and even the walls. Solution: To remove the set-in odor, you’ll probably need a professional carpet cleaning and possibly a professional air cleaning with ozone. But you can scrub your walls down yourself with a cleaning agent called TSP (trisodium phosphate), and then, before repainting, prime them with a sealer such as KILZ, which will lock the smell in and also help the paint adhere better. That sealer will also prevent smoke stains from peeking through the fresh paint.

A front-load washing machine.

The door seal on a front-loader is airtight to keep water from spilling out. So when you close the door after emptying the machine, water doesn’t have a way to evaporate. That can create smelly mold and mildew. Solution: Leave the door open when the washer isn’t in use. If you want to keep the door closed so kids can’t climb in there, try washing every fourth or fifth load of clothes – such as bath towels – in hot water. Or buy a product designed to remove odors from high-efficiency washers.

Pet urine.

If a pet has done its business on the rug, even if the smell and stain fade, the odor will return whenever you have the carpet cleaned or the house gets humid. Solution: A professional cleaner can use a black light to see stains such as urine and blood. The pro will use an enzyme cleaner that will eat away at the urine.

Thomas Wray Kidd is being reunited in North Carolina with a piece of jewelry and a part of his past he thought was gone forever.

It is his Class of 1962 ring, gold with a red gemstone, from Jackson High School in Jackson, North Carolina.

Kidd, now 67 and retired, has not seen the ring since he gave it to his girlfriend in nearby Roanoke Rapids half a century ago, and she accidentally dropped it into her toilet mid-flush.

The girlfriend, Dianne Shearin, was aghast. Her father had a plumber pull the toilet and snake the pipes. “The plumber finally told them, ‘Hey, that ring is gone,”‘ Kidd recalled in an interview.

It was not gone for good. When a storm pipe collapsed in Roanoke Rapids recently and a repair crew responded, a foreman named Dwayne Johnson found the long lost ring. It was just a few blocks from where it had gone into the sewer in 1960.

Johnson took the ring to a local jewelry store, where jeweler Steve Brantley spent three hours cleaning it back to a bright gold.

The ring bore the initials TWK. With Johnson’s consent, a hunt began to find the owner. There weren’t many possibilities. Only 25 students graduated from Jackson High in 1962, a few years before the school closed.

In the city of High Point, Kidd got a call from a former classmate who told him about the ring. Then Brantley called, offering to mail it or deliver it personally when he visited family in High Point.

“He said, ‘Just wait and bring it to me,’ which I’m glad he did because I want to see the look on his face when he’s reunited with his ring after 51 years,” Brantley told Reuters.

Kidd is impressed with Johnson’s honesty in getting the ring back to its owner. He is also happy he will once more be able to give it to the woman he calls his “soul mate and best friend.”

Despite the toilet mishap, Kidd married Dianne Shearin in 1964. They’re still married today.

Terrence McCaigue sued Flat Rate Plumbing, of New Berlin, in Milwaukee County Court. He says he called Flat Rate on March 31 because he had a clogged toilet, and “By April 1, 2011, one day after his initial phone call, Terrence McCaigue had a bill from Flat Rate for $13,698.12.”

McCaigue says that “part of the employees’ job description is to ‘upsell’ the consumer, i.e. to consumer to hire Flat Rate to do more work than the consumer contemplated when they called Flat Rate.”

Flat Rate also wheedles its customers into obtaining financing to pay for work they don’t need and cannot afford, McCaigue says.

He says the two Flat Rate employees who came to his home told him his clogged toilet “could not be fixed and needed to be replaced. Upon information and belief, this statement was false.”

They asked to see the rest of the plumbing, and told him that most of it needed to be replaced too, he says.

The plumbers told him a second toilet had to be replaced because it was loose and “costing him money;” that a bathroom sink “had to be replaced because it had a small stain and a sticky handle;” that a hot water heater “needed to be replaced because it was ‘outdated’ and ‘costing him money;” and that the area near a sink “needed to be replaced because it was not ‘up to code.’”

McCaigue sais he “had not been experiencing problems with any of the plumbing in his home with the exception of the clogged toilet.” He says he “never asked for additional work and even told Flat Rate that he did not have to funds to pay for any replacement plumbing.”

That’s when the employees told him they could help him get financing for it, McCaigue says, though they didn’t put their promises in writing.

He claims that “Flat Rate regularly assists their customers in obtaining credit to finance their work.”

He says they gave him a “Kwik Comfort Consumer Application,” which stated that he should “read the attached credit card agreement and sign below,” but there was no credit card agreement attached. And he says the pre-printed application did not comply with state law.

He says Flat Rate told him he would get 2 years of deferred interest, though the Kwik Comfort application said interest would be deferred for only 1 year.

McCaigue says the plumber charged his new credit card $6,743.12 and showed up at is house the next day and told him that “even more of his plumbing needed to be replaced and that they could help him get additional financing to pay for the work.”

GE Money Bank, the apparent issuer of the Kwik Comfort credit, would not increase his credit limit, though, so the Flat Rate plumbers told him that for their second bill, of $6,955, they would take a $3,000 money order-which they did take-put another $756.88 on his GE Money Bank credit card, and put another $3,198.12 on the credit card next year.

To top it off, McCaigue says, Flat Rate never told him they needed a permit to do the work, never got a permit until after the work was done, and disputed, and that a city inspector found that Flat Rate’s work had violated the building code.

McCaigue seeks rescission of unconscionable contracts, restitution of $10,529, punitive damages, and damages for misrepresentation and for violations of at least seven Wisconsin statutes.
