Cleaning your garbage disposal is a necessity to keep your kitchen smelling fresh and prevent your sink from breaking down, as well as reduce the call for repeated deep cleanings all the time.

Cleaning your garbage disposal is a necessity to keep your kitchen smelling fresh and prevent your sink from breaking down, as well as reduce the call for repeated deep cleanings all the time.

For daily maintenance, you will only need hot water, dish detergent and small scrub brush. It is recommended that you pour hot water in your sink and garbage disposal with a little amount of dish detergent to make some suds. Switch on the garbage disposal and let the water run through. The hot water and dish detergent will help slacken off and get rid of debris that has left in the disposal. Take away the drain or screen and scrub any present dirt using the small scrub brush. After that, return the drain or screen in its original place.

Deep cleanings will help improve the performance of your garbage disposal. This will remove large build-ups and will aid in sharpening the blades. Deep cleanings should be done every one to three weeks, depending on how heavy you use your device. For this technique, you will need ice cubes, baking soda, vinegar, large pot, water and an old toothbrush. First you need to wash away anything that may be in you garbage disposal, then drop some ice cubes in the device to help loosen the debris that has been stuck to the blades or grinders.

It is also known that ice cubes help sharpen the blades or grinders. After doing that, pour half a cup of baking soda and gradually add 1 cup of vinegar to it. Put the cover back as the mixture will produce bubbles and crackles, and let it set for 15 minutes. When 15 minutes is nearly done, boil water in a pot. Once the water is boiled, pour it into the garbage disposal and turn it on to flush away the loosened debris. Use the old toothbrush to clean the splash guard, and return back after.

Since disposals tend to emit unpleasant odors, there are some techniques to prevent them. You can use a couple of sliced lemons or limes to be placed in the disposal. Its acid from the citrus will help get rid any unpleasant smell and will leave your device smelling spanking new and fresh.

Can't live with ‘em, can't live without ‘em–utilities that is! In our economy even those of us who work every day and do our best to pay our bills can fall behind.

Get Your Utilities in Working Order

“We believe that electricity exists because the electric company keeps sending us bills for it!” – Dave Barry

Can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em–utilities that is! In our economy even those of us who work every day and do our best to pay our bills can fall behind. More and more Americans are receiving horrifying calls and correspondences from their utility companies (gas and electric) stating, “Your service has been disconnected for non-payment!”

If that isn’t frustrating and humiliating enough–droves of senior citizens (and others) nationally are fighting the heat without air conditioning and cold without adequate heat because they couldn’t afford to keep up with their ever rising utility bills. In the midwest, Nicor gas has instituted a short-term program to help those in need and utility companies nationally are following suit, you just have to know where to look.

For example, Nicor has a program called Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) LIHEAP provides qualifying low-income households assistance in one annual payment to be used for energy bills. This is an example, there are thousands of utility companies and each one has their special programs. In addition Nicor offers the Nicor Gas Sharing Program

Managed by the Salvation Army, this program provides one-time annual grants to residential customers who do not qualify for federal assistance.

Nationally, consumers spend a whopping 5 percent – 12 percent of their annual income on utility bills. (Even more as gas at the ump creeps up to $5 a gallon!) The best way to save money on utilities is to conserve the energy to begin with.

Here are 10 ways to help you save:

1. Lower the temperature on your hot water heater. Keeping the hot water heater at an even 110 degrees can save you $50 a year.

2. Pull the plug on electronics that are not in use; coffee pots, phone chargers, any item that is not currently in use can be sucking money out of your sockets.

3. Turn off lights & or appliances where no one is working. (I can still hear my mom telling me to turn off the lights!)

4. Insulate your hot water heater. Thermal fireproof heater jackets are available for $20 or less at Lowes, Home Depot, HOBO, etc. (Believe it or not this is a biggie)

5. Save 50 percent by washing in cold water as opposed to hot.

6. Wash your dishes by hand? OK, not realistic? (I cannot say, “Do as I say, not as I do–manicures, come on!) Then never run your dishwasher half full, fill ‘er up!

7. Using your microwave instead of the traditional oven (gas or electric) can save you 50 percent in energy charges. (Who knew?)

8. Save up to $500 a year. If you can keep your thermostat at no lower than 78 degrees in summer and no higher than 68 degrees in winter the savings are very very impressive!

9. Check out the savings on websites of companies that manufacture the newer fluorescent curly light bulbs that substitute for traditional bulbs. Longer life and more candle power for less offer savings in the hundreds of dollars per year.

10. Using the clothes dryer is a total habit. However, hanging items outside on warm sunny days saves energy and brings new freshness to towels and sheets. Using a drying rack inside not only saves energy but adds humidity for free to the air in your house.

PS: As the need for air-conditioning increases with the temperature and humidity– don’t forget to use your “thermostat timer”, your house doesn’t have to be 65 degrees when you are at work and no one is home. Save 25 percent a month by allowing the temp to rise a few degrees when you are gone–set timer to start up again about an hour before you expect to get home.

The idea of watching the needle on your electric meter turn backward instead of forward is a wondrous concept for any homeowner.

Unfortunately, the materials needed to make this dream a reality — solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heating, a solar-powered water heater, recaptured rain water — can total in the tens of thousands.

But you don’t have to invest your life savings in green technology to save money on your heating and cooling bills. In fact, the first step in making your home more green doesn’t cost any money at all.

Read on to learn the 11 simple projects that can be done over the course of a weekend to decrease your carbon footprint — and keep your home from leaking money out the window.

1. Change Your Thinking

One of the biggest impacts you can make on the efficiency of your home and the cost of your utilities is to be more conscious about the amount of energy your home consumes. Basically, if it’s not in use, turn it off.

Take a stroll through your house and take notice of the simple things that are costing you money. Turn off lights that are not in use; repair leaky faucets; turn up the fridge and the freezer; lower the temperature of your water heater; adjust your thermostat. These simple actions — and the heightened awareness behind them — are the first steps in making your home a well-tuned machine of energy efficiency.

Other eco-conscious tips for the future include upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and low-flow shower heads, taking shorter showers, air-drying your clothes and running the dishwasher and washing machine with full capacities.

You don’t necessarily have to do with less to make a difference in your home’s efficiency. You just need to be conscious and take action on the changes that can be made.

2. Audit Your Home

Many utility companies and climate-control specialists offer blower-door tests for pinpointing air leaks in your home. While these tests can cost upwards of $300, a little assistance from Mother Nature can also work in determining unwanted leaks. On the next windy day, burn a stick of incense or light a candle and carry it through your house looking for air movement. Take note of the questionable areas and move in closer to pinpoint the exact culprits. Mark the areas with a Post-It note or painter’s tape for reference in step two.

While every home is unique, there are a few areas where infiltration shows up repeatedly in such tests: check the seam between the top of the foundation wall and the wood framing that runs around doors and windows; also check along baseboards, electrical outlets and switches mounted on exterior walls; and around fireplaces, laundry vents, attic hatchway doors and pull-down stairways, attic fans and pipe and wire chases.

The next step is to seal these leaks with caulk or insulating foam. A few minutes spent pinpointing and eliminating air leaks is an essential foundation to maintaining a comfortable and efficient home.

3. Do Windows

Upgrading all of the windows in your home to double-paned casings is a bold step in making your home more energy efficient, albeit a costly one. Adding storm windows, an extra pane of glass or plexi-glass to the exterior can offer almost as much efficiency for a fraction of the investment.

Both methods help to create a heat-trapping buffer that decreases energy loss and maintains interior comfort. As an even cheaper measure, consider applying a light- and heat-controlling film to your windows. 100-foot rolls typically sell for $150, and effectively block up to 60% of the sun’s heat and 99% of UV rays.

4. Switch to CFLs

Compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs use 70% less energy and last six- to 10-times longer than incandescent bulbs. According to a recent Consumer Reports study, by replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb with a 13-watt compact fluorescent that offers the same amount of light, you could save more than $57 over the life of the CFL.

This simple switch can make a dramatic impact in your monthly energy bill. Also, the price of CFLs has greatly decreased in recent years, making your start-up costs more bearable. Start by replacing the bulbs in your kitchen and bathroom — two of the most-used rooms in your home, which also require lots of light. And don’t forget about lamps that may be left on overnight or exterior lights that might escape your attention.

5. Insulate

Depending on when it was built, chances are your home is insufficiently insulated. Building codes for home insulation have changed greatly in the last 10 years, even more since the 1920s. Lucky for you, great strides have also been made in insulation technology.

Attic insulation can be added in easy-to-apply rolls or blown-in cellulose insulation made from recycled newspapers. For older home owners (pre-1950), you will probably need to add insulation to your walls as well. For this project, you might want to hire out the job, which requires drilling into each section between studs and blowing in insulation. The project can be time-consuming and tedious, but well worth the investment.

One thing to keep in mind: The better the insulation, the more the savings. Going 10% to 20% beyond the minimum insulation requirements in your area will only help increase your savings in the long run.

6. Replace Your Filters

A dirty air filter can reduce the efficiency of your central heating and cooling system by as much as 20%. Regularly changing or cleaning your air filters will help reduce your carbon footprint and can also help with your allergies or asthma. Either way, you’ll certainly sleep better at night from a project that can take as little as five minutes.

7. Install a Programmable Thermostat

Almost half of the energy we use in our homes goes to heating and cooling. The best way to reduce this number is to follow this simple mantra: “68 in winter, 78 in summer.” Programmable thermostats can help achieve this goal by not only regulating the temperature while you’re at home, but also limiting usage when you are away.

Programmable units range from simple, timer-like devices to elaborate, multi-function units that provide special instructions to your climate control system based on the day of the week and time of day. Once programmed, these thermostats work behind the scenes, saving you money and anticipating climate control needs.

8. Baby Your Water Heater

Aside from lowering the temperature of your water heater, you can significantly help retain heat and decrease the amount of energy needed to heat water by simply wrapping insulation around the unit. Inexpensive insulating blankets are readily available at your local hardware store. Additionally, wrapping the piping that runs from the unit with pre-formed pipe insulation sleeves can lessen heat loss when carrying hot water to your faucets.

If you’re ready for a new water heater, consider an upgrade to a tankless system that offers instant, on-demand hot water. Many states also offer rebates for upgrading to a solar-heated water system, the total cost for which runs around $10,000 or so — an investment that will pay itself off in 10 to 15 years worth of savings.

9. Eliminate Ghost Usage

Even when turned off, electronics such as alarm clocks, microwave ovens, televisions, computers and cell phone chargers are sipping energy. The energy used to keep display clocks and memory chips working accounts for 5% of total domestic energy consumption.

The best way to eliminate this silent cost is to introduce a circuit breaker or power strip that can be completely turned off when electronics are not in use. Simply plug your entertainment center, computer or phone chargers into an inexpensive power strip that can easily stop the power flow with the flick of a switch. This ensures these electronics aren’t adding to the ghost usage effect and hiking up your energy bill when they’re not being used.

10. Plant a Tree

Shade provided by trees can reduce your air conditioning bill by as much as 10 to 15%. In winter, trees offer a wind break that can translate into a 25% reduction in heating fuel consumption. While it can take many years for a tree to reach full maturity and offer maximum benefits to your home, there are fast-growing varieties that can offer relief in the short term.

Evergreens, willows, magnolias and hybrid poplars can be strategically placed to start offering home-cooling shade in as little as three to five years. While an extra cost, purchasing mature trees can jump-start the process, and offer a return on your investment in dramatically less time. Additionally, crepe myrtles, oleander varieties and bamboo can offer shade over the course of a season.

11. Pull the Blinds

Curtains and blinds offer exceptional insulation properties in winter, and can help reflect the sun’s energy in the summer to maintain a desirable temperature in your home. The trick is to take the extra step to make the free energy of the sun work in your favor.

In the summer, keep drapes and curtains closed on the sunny side of the house. In the winter, open those drapes and curtains to take advantage of the sun’s heating power. Close all drapes, blinds or shades at night during winter months to make use of their insulating properties.

These 11 simple projects will make your home more energy efficient and save you money on your utility bills — all with an affordable price tag and a quick turnaround. After all, it is the simple things in life that make people happy.

The 10 people aboard Atlantis and the International Space Station are demonstrating the wide variety of skills astronauts need to have for space travel, and the tasks in the job jar today are definitely not glamorous.

A day after a spectacular spacewalk, the astronauts are fixing toilets and moving boxes.

Atlantis astronauts Chris Ferguson, pilot Doug Hurley and two mission specialists — Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim — are spending the better part of their day moving stowage racks and cargo from the shuttle-launched Raffaello logistics module into the international outpost.

About five tons of food and supplies — or about a year’s worth — were hauled up in the Italian-built moving van. An equal amount of surplus gear and trash will be stuffed into the module for the return trip home.

Space station flight engineer Ron Garan went from spacewalking Tuesday to plumbing today.

One of the toilets on the U.S. side of the station broke down Tuesday and Garan got the call to fix the potty. He has been busy exchanging air hoses and other parts to put the toilet back into service. In the meantime, the astronauts and cosmonauts have been using toilet facilities on the Russian side of the station and in Atlantis

If your home has a garbage disposal, there are a few things plumbing professionals will tell you not to do. While they may appreciate it when you do these ...

If your home has a garbage disposal, there are a few things plumbing professionals will tell you not to do. While they may appreciate it when you do these things because they get to do a repair job, honest plumbers will tell you what to avoid to keep them from returning. When it comes to your garbage disposal, this is what you want to know.

Believe it or not, problems with the garbage disposal, or problems caused because of its use, are one of the most common reasons people call a plumbing professional. Sadly, homeowners often do not know how to use these devices properly.

First, understand what these were created for. They were not created to be used for very large pieces of debris left on your plate. Rather, they were created to chop up the smaller food particles that end up going down the drain while you are doing dishes. There are some items that simply cannot be sent down the garbage disposal safely without damaging the parts or the rest of your home’s plumbing.

Pasta and rice are two food items that may seem small and soft when you send them down, but quickly swell when touched by water. This means they will not be able to get through the trap on most home systems, and eventually they will cause a backup. When enough of these foods accumulate in the trap, your disposal will stop working and you will get a backup.

Disposals are absolutely not equipped to chop up animal bones. These need to go in the trash. If you are worried about the smell, stick an old coffee can in the freezer and add your bones to it. On garbage day, take them to the curb in the can. This will keep you from smelling up your home with old bones while protecting your garbage disposal.

Homeowners often assume that they can pour hot grease down the drain. The problem with this is that the grease will solidify when it cools, and as a result will gum up the disposal unit or create blockages in the rest of the plumbing. This is best disposed of in the trashcan.

Finally, avoid shoving eggshells down your disposal. The blades simply cannot chop them fine enough to get through the trap. These need to go in the garbage, or you will find yourself calling the plumber sooner than you intended.

When you do have a problem, do not stick your hand down into the unit unless you are certain it is turned off and no one will be able to turn it on. The blades in your disposal can easily cut your hands. Also, avoid shoving utensils down there to try to dislodge something or otherwise fix the problem. When you have a problem with your disposal, it is time to call the professional plumber in your area. It is far better to be safe than sorry when dealing with this very expensive and important aspect of your home’s plumbing.

As we established above, the improper use of a garbage disposal unit can mess up your home’s pipes. However, if you encounter a problem at your home , a Nixco plumbing professional will be able to fix it up.

Here are five tips for when a water main breaks near your home.

1. Keep and fill some containers with water in advance for drinking and other normal uses.

2. Keep all faucets closed while water is off to prevent possible damage when water is restored and high pressure can shoot water out.

3. Turn off electric hot water heaters.

4. Gas hot water heaters should be set on low or pilot.

5. After a temporary service interruption and if discolored water is experienced from your faucet, it is recommended to let the taps run for a short time in order to flush out their internal lines.

Question

I tested the water heater pressure-relief valve and it seems to work OK, but the pipe outside seems to drip a lot, especially if we don’t use hot water for a day or so. Is this normal or a problem that needs to be fixed?

Answer

The drip you see may be the result of several different problems:

» The problem could be as simple as a leaking pressure-relief valve. The valve may turn on and off normally, but if the water doesn’t completely stop running, then you should replace the valve.

» If water continues to drip after the installation of a new pressure-relief valve, then you may have the temperature of your water tank set too high. But be careful not to turn the temperature below about 125 F. At lower temperatures, dangerous little critters can grow in the water heater. They can make you seriously ill.

» Another possible cause for the leaking is excessive water pressure. You can test this condition with a water-pressure gauge at one of the outside faucets. The optimal pressure is about 50 PSI (pound-force per square inch), so if your PSI is 70 or higher, this could be causing your leak.

If all else fails, call Nixco Plumbing Inc. to install an expansion tank onto your existing water-heating system. Then, when slightly excessive heat and pressure buildup cause excess water to expand, it ends up being stored in the expansion tank rather than on the ground.
